George, it’s honestly time for humanity to go extinct. We’re fucked.. and eventually nature will triumph. At the end of the day, it always does. Man cannot win against nature. But it is wonderful to see the ways in which nature “revolts” against civilization. How it pushes back, keeps on fighting. I see it all the time on the sidewalks in my town. Weeds pushing up through the cracks in the sidewalk, wildflowers growing in my yard in spring.. it’s lovely.
Another great piece, George, and it reminds me of Sherlock Holmes' beautiful words to Dr. Watson at the end of 'The Naval Treaty':
"What a lovely thing a rose is. There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion. It can be built up as an exact science by the reasoner. Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers."
Despite his reputation for being a cold logician and a loner (and he is certainly both of those things), Sherlock is also a wonderfully progressive humanist.
Thank you George for your profound but heartbreaking post. I too can’t go anywhere without wondering what it was like before humanity came along. What beautiful creatures, plants and natural landforms were erased in the process of development. Missing the presence of animals I’ve never seen or even heard about, isn’t easy. Thank you
The Cats and dogs have not left nature as we have. Nature will once again not be our allegedly happy and tacitly satisfied home. We have always had mind over matter and as some miracle of atomic consciousness we have decided the current state of nature is acceptable or desirable. The liars and heavyweight$ of life can't hold all this fire wind and violence together much longer. Your cat and dog are ready to run and shelter in place... Are you?
Thanks for personalising this one. Greece is high on my "to visit" list. Even if it has suffered terribly at the hands of humans - just like everywhere else really.
Let's not kid ourselves: "humanity" is f.u.b.a.r. - fucked up beyond all repair.
There's nothing left to do, it's time to become extinct.

Thanks Mark!

Good to know it’s not just me Margaret!
I loved, loved this post, George. Thank you for writing it.
Thank you Pat!
